10 Tips for a Better Postpartum: Tip #10
This post is part of the series, 10 Tips for a Better Postpartum. This is Tip #10 in a list of 10 things you can do in pregnancy to set yourself up for a more comfortable, peaceful, and enjoyable postpartum journey.
Tip #10: Hire a Postpartum Doula
Upon learning of my toddler’s upcoming first birthday, my midwife congratulated me. I was caught off guard. Sensing my surprise, she explained that the first birthday celebration is really more about the parents. Obviously our 1 year old would not remember her 1st birthday celebrations, but it was more than that.

While the first year is full of so much cuteness, so many baby snuggles, and all the sweet things that come with having a baby, it is also full of challenge. After going through the physical demands of growing and birthing a human into the world, parents are suddenly tasked with the responsibility of caring for that tiny dependent human. The first year is full of sleep deprivation, learning a million new skills, adjusting to new roles, and working through all the emotions associated with this major life transition. It’s a lot.
What if, though, parents had the support of a caring, knowledgeable guide to help ease the challenges of this transition? Research reveals that families who have this kind of support do better in that first year, with greater success in lactation, lower rates of postpartum depression, and increased self-confidence.
Give yourself the gift of a postpartum doula. Postpartum doulas can ease and enhance the postpartum journey, offering knowledge, non-judgmental support, and the ability to help fill the gaps of our society’s often inadequate approach to postpartum care.
Ways a Postpartum Doula Can Improve Your Postpartum Journey:
Allowing you to put all your energy toward healing and bonding with baby
Stepping in to allow you to get some much needed sleep
Helping you understand what to expect from a newborn
Assisting you with newborn care
Teaching you baby soothing skills
Being a nonjudgmental listening ear
Helping ease the transition for older siblings
Being an extra pair of hands as you navigate new routines
Assisting with meal preparation and light household tasks
Enhancing your intuitive nurturing abilities
Encouraging you as you develop your unique parenting approach
Offering accurate and evidence based information
Making quality and timely referrals – getting you appropriate support for your specific need
Give yourself an early 1st birthday gift and hire a postpartum doula!
